What is Denim Day?

The Denim Day campaign was originally triggered after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court, where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her attacker remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol against the misconceptions about sexual violence.

How do I participate?

ANYONE can participate in Denim Day! Someplace Safe asks community members, businesses and students to make a social statement by wearing jeans on April 27, 2016 as a visible symbol of support for survivors of sexual violence.

Will you consider pledging a few dollars for the “privilege” of wearing jeans to work and everywhere you go on April 27, 2016? You may bring your “Dollars for Denim” proceeds to your local Someplace Safe office, or mail to: Someplace Safe, P.O. Box 815, Fergus Falls, MN 56538-0815

A limited number of Denim Day posters and stickers are available to help you promote Denim Day at your place of businesses or within your group. To request your Denim Day packets, please contact your local office or email: give@someplacesafe.info.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) was first officially observed as a national awareness month in 2001. Fifteen years later, in 2016, SAAM has been instrumental in bringing public awareness and activism to sexual assault, a once-hidden issue. According to the CDC, 1 in 5 women is a survivor of rape, and 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men have experienced some form of sexual violence in their lives. These staggering statistic show just how widespread sexual violence is in our society.

This April, the SAAM campaign is focused on prevention, with the slogan stating “prevention is possible”. Prevention is possible when everyone in our community gets involved in creating a safer environment for all. Prevention efforts aim to stop sexual violence before it even happens.

How can you, your workplace, group, campus, or community prevent sexual violence before it happens? Join Someplace Safe this April in promoting safe behaviors, strengthening policies at school and work, and encouraging healthy relationships by:

  • Intervene to stop concerning behaviors
  • Speak up when you hear rape jokes or harmful comments
  • Promote and model healthy attitudes and relationships
  • Believe survivors when they disclose
  • Coordinate a community event to raise awareness
  • Email legislators about ways everyone can get involved
  • Create prevention policies at your workplace or school
  • Support businesses that promote healthy messages through their marketing campaigns (from http://www.nsvrc.org/blogs/saam/when-everyone-involved-prevention-possible)

What can you do in your community to support victims and survivors of sexual violence? The first step is increasing awareness and community involvement in preventing sexual violence. Join Someplace Safe at one or all of our awareness events and fundraisers this spring whether it be through volunteerism, sponsorship, or attendance.
