Shelter Volunteer Opportunities

Help give women and children a safe place to stay and heal. To volunteer, contact the Shelter at 218-739-3359 or shelter@someplacesafe.info.

Services for Survivors
  • Children’s Support Group Assistant: Provide guidance and supervision during the weekly Children’s Support Group.
  • Event Coordinator: Plan and facilitate special activities such as sing-a-longs, exercise, baking, crafts, haircuts & “make-over’s.”
  • Massage Therapist: Come to the shelter with regularity to provide messages and guidance towards personal stress relief.
  • Pro-Bono Professional Services: Provide your professional legal, medical, beauty and other skills to help survivors.
  • Truck Availability: Provide on-call availability of a pick-up truck to help residents move into a new facility.
Work with Children
  • Male Mentors: Children need to interact with positive male role models. Recurring and on-call commitments are needed.
  • Children’s Helper: Volunteers are needed to read to children and organize and run age appropriate crafts projects.
  • Child Care: Take children on recreational activities and outings, provide childcare to give mothers time off and monitor children during women’s support group.
Cooking, Yardwork and Maintenance Support
  • Food Shopper: Buy groceries once a week.
  • Go-for: Run errands for staff and residents as needed.
  • House Maintenance Assistant: Perform minor repairs such as replacing light bulbs,cleaning, vacuuming, etc.
  • Landscaper/Gardener: Developing a basic landscape design, oversee its installation and providing continuing care. Assisting with the development of flower and vegetable gardens.
  • Exterior Maintenance Assistant: Mowing, trimming, flower gardening, shoveling walks, etc.
Legislative and Community Advocacy
  • Legislative Action Worker: Advocate through letter writing campaigns, telephone tree, and special projects
  • Speakers Assistant: Share personal experiences of battering at speaking presentations, churches, schools, Women’s Support Group, etc.
Fundraising and Community Support
  • Direct fundraiser: Solicit items and resources from local individuals and businesses as assigned.
  • Event Coordinator: Organize fundraising events and annual meetings.
