Shelter for Battered Women & Their Children

The shelter is open to all women and their children who are recent victims of domestic violence regardless of age, race, or sexual orientation. The shelter provides a safe, home-like environment and is staffed 24 hours a day. Women staying in shelter share the living space, but usually have their own bedroom. Often several families reside in shelter together; therefore everyone is encouraged to work together in preparing meals, and doing household chores.

Someplace Safe gives women the security and time to sort through the personal and family complexities caused by violence. Women are supported in their personal growth, decision making, and in exploring available options. Our advocates assist women in accessing community resources, and help with navigating social services, legal, educational, medical, and law enforcement systems. The staff is committed to supporting whatever choices a woman makes.

Q & A

Do I have to pay to stay at the shelter?
No, all basic necessities will be provided.

Can I bring my children?
Yes, if they are under the age of 18 or if they are 18 and still in High School. The shelter has a fenced in playground and yard. There is also a large playroom inside the shelter.

No, but we will help you arrange a ride if you do not have one.

Two weeks, but everyone’s situation is different.

Where is the shelter?
The shelter is located in Fergus Falls, MN. Fergus Falls is approximately 3 hours from Minneapolis in West-Central MN. Fergus Falls is a small city with a population of 12,000. There is no public transportation and housing is limited. There is a 2 year college within city limits.

How do I know for sure if I am a victim of domestic violence?
Ask yourself these questions.

  • Does your partner ridicule or embarrass you in public?
  • Does your partner use threats or intimidation to get you to do something?
  • Does your partner get physical with you; shoving, pushing or hitting?
  • Does your partner try to control or restrict your activities?
  • Does your partner blame you for the way he/she acts or feels?

The definition of advocate in the dictionary reads-“One that argues for a cause; a supporter or defender; one that pleads in another’s behalf.”
