A Chance to Help
It seems that when someone needs help, people come together to get involved and do what they can. Sometimes it is by donating their time or talents, material items, money, cooking food, or just simply being there to listen and support. In the case of Someplace Safe, we are an organization that is often in need of help to help others. Someplace Safe has been around for nearly 35 years, and we continue to help countless people in a variety of ways. Fortunately, it has been a natural fit for community members to get involved with our organization, and by doing so, help not only strangers, but friends, families, coworkers, and neighbors.
In July of 2010 Someplace Safe opened a thrift store in Alexandria. Since that time, there have been well over 6000 hours of time donated by volunteers - nearly $75,000 worth of time
! Amazing! Everyone helps in a different way and does things that they are comfortable with. One person may want to organize books, another put away donations, and yet another wanting to clean the bathrooms. It is truly amazing to see people pitching in and helping out all for a great cause.
The Someplace Safe Thrift Store
offers a wide variety of options for people to volunteer. Some opportunities include: sorting donations, putting donations away, washing and cleaning donations, assisting with cleaning the store, and some general office assistance. There are also volunteer opportunities at the store for large groups and individuals. Volunteers are able to pick their own shifts (in two hour blocks) so the times fit into your schedule.
As a special Thank You to our volunteers, Someplace Safe is hosting a day-long Volunteer Appreciation event
at the Thrift Store on Tuesday, April 23 from 10am-5pm. Door prizes, refreshments, and other surprises and specials will be going on throughout the day. Information will also be available for NEW volunteers or individuals who want to learn more about Someplace Safe and our work throughout the region. Our monthly Volunteer Orientation will also be held at the store from 1-2pm, so be sure to bring your friends and stop by!
Any profits generated from sales at the Thrift Store stay within Someplace Safe to help fund our programming and services. Someplace Safe helps victims of general crime, sexual assault, and domestic violence. A variety of volunteer opportunities are also available throughout the organization. If you would like to help Someplace Safe through volunteerism, please contact an Advocacy Office near you
, or call the Thrift Store at 320-763-4677 and ask for Karen or Anna. Thank you for helping us help others!
