This March join Someplace Safe in observing Women’s History Month recognizing the vast contributions women have made not only to our organization, but to our country, history, and society.
In 1980 President Jimmy Carter declared March as Women’s History Month. At that time, what started out as just a week-long celebration, evolved into an entire month dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of women. Not only has March become a time to reflect on those who not only fought for the rights of women, but also for those who paved new roads for future women to walk on.
Notable women like Amelia Earhart, who showed girls all over the world they could fly; Ann Frank, who has shared her testimony of strength and survival for generations after her death; and Rosa Parks, who was named by the United States Congress as “The First Lady of Civil Rights.”; as well as millions of women whose names didn’t make the history book, have fought battles, both publicly and silently, for the betterment of women.
Gender Inequality.
Even with advances, the issue of gender inequality still remains today. Gender inequality refers to the unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. It arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles. Gender inequality is not a new concept. Consider the following:
Sometimes, gender inequality can lead to unhealthy and imbalanced, relationships at home, in the workplace, and in many other areas in life. It is also known that violence against women is many times rooted in the unequal power relationships between men and women in society.
What can be done?
It is important that each of us works together to create a community that is safer for women. Consider the following:
Each and every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, not just in March, but throughout the year. As our local communities work to improve the lives of women, Someplace Safe is helping our communities achieve safety through education, awareness and critical services.
