This Summer, Help Save Lives by Supporting Someplace Safe Thrift Stores!

The weather is warm, school is out, and summer is in full swing. For many, the summer months bring about long-awaited household and yard projects. While cleaning storage rooms and garages, and sorting through the closets of children and family members, one likely encounters an abundance of items which are no longer needed.

Need a home for these once loved treasures? Look no further than Someplace Safe Community Thrift Stores! Your donations of gently used furniture, household items, and clothing help stock our shelves and provide local survivors of crime with the items needed to begin new, safer lives.

Someplace Safe Thrift Stores, located in Alexandria and Morris, are unlike most other stores in that your support actually helps save lives! That’s right … when you donate your gently used items, or shop at the stores, it provides funding and support for critical Someplace Safe programming and services.

Further, your donations have a direct impact on clients and the community. Someplace Safe provides store vouchers to agency clients, as well as community members in need (from local partner programs). This allows local individuals to obtain needed furniture when starting over in a new home, clothing for school, work wear, and household necessities. Access to these vouchers has been especially important this past year, as the Covid-19 impact had widespread financial impacts for area victims, survivors, and families. In fact, 872 individuals accessed Someplace Safe Thrift Store vouchers this past year, a 60% increase from the previous year.

A simple thrift store voucher can be life changing for some, impacting their lives in very meaningful ways. Take a look at what one staff member had to say about the impact of one such voucher:

“I once worked with high school student who was sexually assaulted by a family member’s boyfriend. In the aftermath of the assault, and while sitting in the emergency room, her and I began talking about her upcoming prom. She was excited to go, however she told me that there was no way her family could afford a dress. Several days later, I provided her with a voucher to the Someplace Safe Thrift Store. She was able to obtain a beautiful prom dress … it looked brand new! She also found shoes and jewelry. This completely raised her spirits. The young woman attended her prom and said she ‘felt just like Cinderella’. I was so happy to see how special she felt that evening!” – Someplace Safe Crime Victim Advocate

Not only do Someplace Safe Thrift Stores have a positive impact on clients and community members, shoppers enjoy the store too. Daily specials and exclusive text message alerts keep customers coming in for deals and promotions, while fresh inventory each day provides new and exciting items to shop.

Someplace Safe Thrift Stores also provide a variety of employment and volunteer opportunities. Whether looking for a part-time job, or a volunteer opportunity to fill those long summer days, Someplace Safe Thrift Stores are happy to work around a variety of schedules or needs. For more information, or to inquire about employment or volunteer opportunities, please contact the Alexandria store by calling 320-763-4677 or the Morris store by calling 320-585-6614.
